The fundamental difference between online teaching and conventional mode of classroom teaching is a mentor’s contribution to the development of value systems among teenagers or kids in general. Teachers are not just tools to facilitate learning, but they also share the duty of shaping the individuals and making them fit into the social fabric. As a kid transits into adolescence, moves from middle school to high school, the degree of importance of thoughts, decisions, and actions has to be taught to them. Teachers and parents share the responsibility of sensitizing and aligning the children with the civic code of conduct of a social set up. 

 

Why is the development of a value system among kids important?

 

First of all, the question arises: what are values, and why are they significant? At the most rudimentary level, they can be defined as the guiding principles that ignite the sense of differentiation between wrong and right. These ideals will further assist the kids in making judgments by offering a glimpse of probable consequences. Teenagers who can sense and differentiate between right and wrong or just and unjust at the high school level are likely to develop into individuals with high moral values and empathy. This trait will help them assimilate ethics, values, and morals into their personality as they grow into adults. Individuals raised in such a way contribute to a healthy society and a strong nation. Values of compassion, honesty, tolerance, dignity, integrity, cleanliness, if cultivated at the high school level, will address the deep-rooted evils of the society like racism, gender bias, inequality, corruption, and irresponsibility.

 

A male teenager, when educated about respecting female classmates, is less likely to indulge in violence targeted towards women in later life. This mindset has to be cultivated gradually through the developmental years. Basic awareness about the physiological changes enables them to treat the opposite sex with dignity. A behavioral code, once in place, can be replicated in future times as well. So, such oriented individuals will display a dignified behavior towards their female colleagues at the workplace as well. 

 

A high school teenager who is most commonly tempted to use unfair means to pass through an examination has to be instilled with the knowledge of true merit of getting rewarded. This generation of students must be brought to terms with the reality that there’s no value in scoring well in exams with the means of cheating. This somewhere becomes a stepping stone towards building a mindset, and such a person will be hesitant in stealing credit for someone else’s hard work, a common cause of discord at the workplace.

 

Some teenagers fall prey to substance abuse, taking phony ideas of using substances to escape the pain. The false sense of achieving tranquility or peace often leads teenagers into a cycle of addiction and the idea of escapism. A robust value system enables a teenager to understand the value of life, love, and relationships. It acts as a bastion protecting the individual from going astray. The future generations must set up a belief system that deals with difficult situations rather than just escaping from confrontations. If teenagers are taught to respect life, tackle challenges, stay grounded, they are less likely to fall prey to substance abuse.

 

How can teenagers be instilled with good values? Here are some suggestions:

 

 

  • Foster a good environment

 

Values are acquired and not inherent, so the environment has a great part to play. Children of all ages learn by imitating their parents and teachers. Teenagers develop a sense of “fair and just” by observing the world around them and the people whom they love and trust. Teenagers are adept at spotting the difference between what is said and done. Therefore, we need to portray honesty in our actions if we want them to emulate the trait of honesty. Parents and teachers can, therefore, become exemplars to an array of values.

 

  • Avoid lecturing

 

Lecturing or mentoring teenagers only when something goes wrong will not help. Nothing turns off teenagers than preaching, which often creates a rift between them and parents. Thus, teachers and parents must adopt a conversational tone with teenagers so that the message reaches them subtly.

 

  • Emphasize appreciation

 

Appreciation and rewards never fail to leave an impact. When teenagers exhibit outstanding behavior, parents and teachers must tell them how proud they are of them. This enables teenagers to set parameters and put effort into matching the standards through their actions.

 

  • Master the art of storytelling

 

By sharing anecdotes/stories, teachers and parents can educate the teenagers. Citing the consequences of the application of timeless values in the adult world can help them develop perception and strengthen their belief system.

 

Education, therefore, must be holistic, targeting an all-round development of a teenager so that once they leave the porches of their high school, they are ready to be a responsible citizen of the nation.
